Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was raised by her mother, grandparents and godparents. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford became interested in acting during her teens, and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she wasn't a good fit. Ford was then able to apply to be a student in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993, but she already made a TV appearance on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate was also a regular performer as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies that were added to Tate's selection in the year 1996.
